TCA Success Stories: From Getting No Calls or Interviews to a Project Manager role
Sep 19, 2024When Chidi moved to Canada in Dec 2022 to join his family, he had a lot of expectations and made some assumptions. However, one assumption that he made which failed him and delayed his transition into tech is that his 10 years’ experience as a program manager with a not-for-profit organisation in Nigeria will make him a “hot cake” once he lands in Canada.
So as soon as Chidi landed, he started applying for jobs using his Nigerian CV and hoping to land a job in Canada based on his Nigerian experience. The Result – No Calls, No Interviews and even No Rejections – Just deafening silence for 3.5 months. It was so bad that Chidi started suspecting his “village people” (aka his enemies who may be using spiritual means to prevent his progress)
As any other smart individual will do Chidi started asking questions and seeking for a solution. This is where most people give up and assume that they are not meant for great things and then settle for warehouse jobs or customer service jobs with a wealth of transferable experience and top academic qualifications. But not Chidi. He started researching online and found TCA.
In his words: “When I spoke to Steve I felt assured and knew that I have found my career partner”. Chidi quickly signed up for the Project Management program. Chidi’s commitment and presence during the live project were evident. Also, Chidi solved a major problem that he had during this period. In Chidi’s words: The live project experience, dedicated mentorship and optimised resume made a world of difference and was the missing link for me” Chidi learnt how to leverage his existing experience and apply it to the Canadian job market. As soon as Chidi received his optimised resume, he hit the job market.
This time things were completely different like Night and Day, the recruiter calls were flowing in, but Chidi encountered another roadblock. He was progressing to the second and final stages of the interviews but not getting any offers, so he reached out to his mentor who conducted a mock interview for him and realised that his responses were a bit generic and he wasn’t as confident as he should be even when giving the correct responses. They worked on this together and established an action plan which Chidi followed to the T. Chidi’s next interview was a breeze, according to Chidi “ it felt more like a chat” as he breezed through and has now been offered a fantastic Project Coordinator role with the government.
