When someone gets kicked out of University due to poor academic performance, the world would naturally expect that person to fail in their future career endeavors, struggle with personal relationships, face continual financial hardships and maybe end up on the streets or in jail.

But what if we told you that this same person also graduated with first-class honors from a top university in the UK, became a student executive at the University has now secured a fantastic job as a User Researcher making over 6 figures – will you believe it…Don’t just take our word for it, here is Sam’s story…

When Sam left Nigeria to pursue an undergraduate in the UK, it wasn’t due to his academic excellence or scholarships, in fact it was because he was kicked out from University due to poor academic performance and has stayed at home for over a year – feeling like a failure and battling depression.

On arriving into the UK, Sam saw his opportunity as a second chance and started one of the most incredible transformation journeys through the help of a mentor. This transformation included small but consistent changes like sitting in front, paying attention in class and completing assignments on time, engaging more during classes, etc. This change in attitude culminated in Sam vying for and winning a student executive in the University and also graduating with first-class honors

As with every recent graduate, the next question was how to secure a fantastic job. Luckily, Sam’s uncle was into Tech (precisely User Research) and advised Sam to explore the career path. Based on this advice, Sam reached out to us, and after making enquiries about our program, he signed up.

Sam’s focus was intense as he wanted to grasp everything he could from the program. He asked lots of questions, attended every class and completed all the assigned tasks. Sam knew this was his second chance and couldn’t afford to take it for granted. On completing the program he started applying for jobs and even though recruiters ghosted him, heard a few “NOs” and received some “Unfortunately” emails, he kept going because Sam believed and usually quoted this in class “All I need is one Yes and all the NOs will be worth it” He also connected with his TCA User Research mentor who helped tremendously to refine his interview responses. Sam even volunteered to support his mentor with any User Research tasks, which helped boost his confidence.

And now it has happened!!! Sam secured a beautiful User Research role with a top IT firm in the UK!

Sam’s advice to others who may be on the same journey is to “Hold onto the image of the future they want and see every experience they have as a building block to that future that they want!”
