A Remarkable Journey: From Rejection to a Six-Figure Salary
Apr 02, 2025Today’s success story is one of the most pleasantly shocking success stories that we have had the privilege of sharing. How does someone go from interviewing for a role to receiving a rejection email for the same role they interviewed for and then to receiving an apology and an offer for the same role within the same company? Here is the full story.
A Bold Transition: Leaving Nigeria for New Opportunities in Canada
When Collins moved to Canada with his wife, they were expecting their first baby. Back home in Nigeria, he had been an Operations Manager working with the British Council. But now, in a new country with a baby on the way, things were different.
He assumed that his experience in Nigeria would be easily transferable to the Canadian job market and hoped to quickly secure a Business Analyst role. So he decided to do it himself without any guidance. After applying to so many roles and spending so much time trying different things that he was unsure of and running from pillar to post, he decided that it was time to get help as he didn’t understand the role of a BA, couldn’t speak the lingo, and couldn’t use the tools. Also, he was tired of spending his savings which he had to convert from Naira to Dollars every time.
The TCA Turning Point
So, he took a customer service job just to stop spending in Naira and worrying about currency conversion. Then, while chatting with a friend, he heard about TCA. Without thinking twice, he signed up.
That decision changed everything. From day one, things started to click. He finally understood what a BA really does. The training gave him a clear picture of the job, and being part of a real project helped him to learn the technical skills and made the practical work experience memorable. During the program he was able to recognize all the mistakes he made previously and learned how to fix them. His resume was also completely revamped, and for the first time, he felt ready and confident in his ability to secure a job as a Business Analyst.
Overcoming Setbacks
But life still had its own pace. His baby had just arrived, and family came first. So he delayed sending out his resume. When he finally jumped back into the job market, within 2 weeks, he got two interviews—but didn’t make it. That’s when he remembered he was assigned a mentor from TCA. He reached out to his mentor, got the much-needed guidance, and knew exactly what he needed to do to convert these interviews into offers.
The Miraculous Offer: Turning Rejection into a Six-Figure Government Role
The next interview he had was for a government role. He prepared like there was no tomorrow, leveraging all the resources provided by TCA. Then he received the congratulations email for the government job. His joy knew no bounds. He was happy that all the effort had finally paid off.
But there was one small problem! For the government job, he would be placed in a pool and be called upon at a later stage when there was work to be done. So he decided to wait. It was when he broke the news to Steve that Steve asked him a simple question, “What do you have to lose by continuing to apply for jobs? What if they never get back to you?” This was when it dawned on Collins that he could still continue his applications.
So he dusted up his resume and continued his applications—this time with renewed confidence in his ability to clinch an offer. For some reason, things were a little tougher this time as he wasn’t getting as many offers as before. Then he read a TCA success story where the person shared how tailoring her resume to each job made a big difference. Collins decided to try that too—and it worked. He started getting more calls. He also learned not to delay when applying and to always make things easy for HR to understand. Just those two things—tailoring his resume and applying quickly—changed everything.
In a week, he got five phone interviews. Some didn’t go anywhere, but that was okay. After all, he went from hearing nothing to hearing something. He made it to the final stage for two big roles—one paying $75K and the other paying a six-figure salary. He got an offer for the first one—$75,000. But then something unexpected happened. Following his interview for the second role, which was also with the government, he received a rejection email. He was a little bit disappointed but took consolation in the fact that he had already secured the $75K role.
The next morning, HR called. They had made a mistake. They had picked him for the role. They just sent the wrong message. He was being offered the fantastic six-figure role with the government, with no waiting in the pool. The offer also includes a salary increase after 1 year. And the best part? His office will now be only a 15-minute drive from his home!
Collins was over the moon with joy. From rejection to a six-figure salary!
